I started getting my hair relaxed when I was 10-years-old. I went through the normal burning, and scarring just like many curly headed females have. The turning point for me was when my stylist at the time decided she knew more about my hair and wishes than I did – I know we’ve all been there! Although I told her my scalp was burning she insisted the product stay on my hair for 20 minutes past the first burning sensation. After the treatment was finally rinsed from my hair I was horrified by what was left behind. She had burned my scalp so terribly it blistered and scabbed on 90% of my scalp. I had to put Neosporin on my scalp twice daily and couldn’t comb my hair for fear large chunks might become irritated and fall out.

It was at this moment when I decided relaxed hair was no longer for me. If I couldn’t find a stylist whom respected my wishes (which I couldn’t) then I had to take matters into my own hands. I started my journey in May of 2011 and never looked back! I am happy to say I have been natural for almost 6 years now and have much wisdom to give. It can be really tough to transition, but so many of us have done it or are planning to do it that it’s important to share tips and tricks when we can!
